why Weighing yourself daily won’t make you uptight
I’ve walked a weight loss journey for over a year now and it never ceases to amaze me how many lies I believed. These lies truly held me back from the results I wanted. One of them was that weighing myself daily would make me uptight. It would me religious about my weight loss. That it would, dare I say, evoke some sort of eating disorder. And BOY was I wrong. Keep reading to find out why weighing yourself daily won’t make you uptight and how it is actually an extremely important piece to reaching your goals.

reasons why weighing yourself daily won’t make you uptight
1. Knowledge is Power
When it comes to determining if something is working or not, or to even know where I stand, I need facts. Knowledge. Information. REALITY.
Without the knowledge of your weight you can not determine if you are considered overweight, underweight, or of a healthy weight. You can not determine if your daily habits are causing you to gain weight or lose weight. You could be surprised that your REALITY is different than your FANTASY of what you are just thinking is going on. Either the situation is “better” or “worse” than you expected. No matter what, facing the facts will help you put your big girl pants on and start looking at a solution. If you want something different for yourself you need to open your eyes to see where you stand right now.
2. Control Over Your Weight
Now for the first time in my life I saw that weight loss is not out of reach for anyone, including me. It just takes knowledge (seeing where you’re at by weighing daily) and hard work (monitoring your behavior and modifying it accordingly) to make it happen. To feel out of control is to be helpless.
I was doing a ton of work monitoring my behavior and modifying it. Unfortunately, my plumb line for determining if I needed a change was how I “felt” about my body since I had no real facts. I was encountering quite a bit of discouragement. Gauging my “success” or “failure” by what I saw on a random scale measurement (instead of consistent, daily data) was causing unnecessary stress.
Despite knowing weight can fluctuate, I disregarded the importance of weighing myself daily. Weighing daily shows trends that we can use to monitor TRUE loss or gain. Without this data, I was so discouraged feeling like I wasn’t losing weight no matter what I was trying. These trends are super important to determine if you are ACTUALLY on track towards your goals. Weight loss is not linear. There is no need for unnecessary discouragement when you have ALL the data. You will either know you need to make a change or you are on the right track.
3. Unleash TRUE “Body” Positivity
If the number on the scale is something that brings shame or discouragement, KNOW that it is absolutely nothing to feel ashamed of, or to avoid.
It’s ok to feel guilty that you made wrong choices or let things go too far. Guilt will cause you to repent and turn back to God for help and MOVE FORWARD. Shame says because of these mistakes, you are bad and/or you are worthless. This will sap your strength and often cause you to hide from God or run away from Him.
You are NOT a number. Your weight doesn’t determine your value in Christ. This is one small situation in the grand scheme of life and you shouldn’t let any shame you may feel about your weight control your whole life. Because it WILL control your life, and NOTHING will change. Repent for what you feel you need to repent for (if anything), and ask God for help. Take steps to move forward towards a solution.
If you are still continuing to correlate weight and your worth there is an emotional healing journey for you to walk through. That journey is nothing you need to be afraid of. Confronting these hard feelings and not avoiding them is the first step of healing. If you are continuing to press into God in prayer and move forward and the process is consistently too difficult, there is no shame in seeking Biblical counsel either from a friend, Pastor, or professional. Don’t let hard things hold you back. Your worth in Christ demands so.

How to weigh yourself daily
1. Get a Scale
I have something similar to this that I keep on a shelf in my bathroom because I don’t have the floor space. I take it down and place it on an even surface on my floor when I need to use it.
2. Establish a Routine
The best time to weigh yourself is in the morning, preferably in the nude, after using the bathroom. This eliminates such factors as dehydration, food consumption, swelling, and clothing that can change over the course of the day and day to day.
3. Track in an app (or get out your graph paper and math skills)
I love the Libra app for Android, and there is Happy Scale for iOS. The app or tracking the trend is CRUCIAL and will help you from feeling discouraged when you can’t see the trend of loss (or gain – depending on your goals). This is so important to pinpoint what is working and what is not for reaching your goal.

why weighing myself daily has been instrumental in my weight loss
Personally, I would have given up my weight loss journey without weighing myself daily. Before I was weighing myself daily, I got to a point I was so deeply discouraged because my random and weekly weigh ins weren’t showing much change, if any. I had to reach out to some other women who were on weight loss journeys and they determined from my numbers that I was probably losing weight, and was on track, but that I really needed to weigh myself daily and determine the trend. I still felt all this resistance to doing it, but I decided that downloading an app and weighing myself daily was better than the alternative, which was quitting.
I’m so thankful that I listened to their advice and did and now I can see my success and my little line slowly going down and getting closer to my long and short term goals. I hope this helps you as well and is an encouragement to you in your weight loss journey.
