Doing the best for our kids
Becoming a mom has been the greatest joy of my life. Naturally, I wanted the best possible for her. I focused on feeding myself and my daughter the healthiest most nutritious foods for our health. Full fat raw dairy, fermented foods, homemade sourdough bread met the bill. Our tummies were full and I felt better overall than before. My conscious was clear and we were eating foods that have existed for generations. I loved growing my knowledge and skill set around old ways of doing things. My warehouse of ferments kept growing. I bought a grain mill and my bread skills kept expanding. The access and knowledge I had of healthful foods increased. But despite this increased consumption of ultra nutritious foods, I kept GAINING, and GAINING, and GAINING weight.

Hiking every week and doing at home workouts didn’t seem to help. I started with some that were pilates based, then some HIIT. Then I incorporated some weights with cardio, and progressed straight sets lifting. I had eventually reconciled myself to the fact that this was just the infamous “Mom bod”. Regardless of what I did, I just kept gaining weight regardless.
Some things still weren’t lining up.
I was living from one homemade snack to the next, and I LIVED for my afternoon square of dark chocolate. Being frugal, I was always making casseroles and incorporating cheese as well as a little meat to keep prices down. Of course I had mood swings and was exhausted. I’m a woman- of course I had cravings and a desire for chocolate. Isn’t this normal? I was about to discover that I was STILL nutritionally undernourished despite the healthy choices I was making for myself and my family.

This question just kept scratching at the back of my mind. After research and weighing every option, I found out was wrong concerning what my body actually needed to fuel itself. Raw milk and its friends are nutritious. But I was missing a balance in what I was eating as well. I finally broke down and tracked what I was eating. It took me a while to get to this point! I discovered I was missing out on a whole food group – protein! And I was eating too much fat (and calories) as a whole, contributing to my weight gain. Finally a mystery SOLVED!

- Find out your custom macros. There are a few online sources for this, I used this one which is associated with this group which will give you some personalized guidance. Alternatively you could use this book for men or this one for women - I was able to request from my library. The numbers may differ slightly depending on the calculator but it will give you a general idea and starting point.
- Measure to hold yourself fully accountable with what you are eating. To be accurate, you must measure your food and drink on a food scale.
- Calculate nutrition facts. These are readily available online. USDA has a database for food data and another great one is Nutritionx which I usually look up most things.
- Track to see how what you are eating compares to what you should be consuming in a day. Using an app like this ($3 one-time fee), a journal like this or even a regular notebook.
- Keep on going and refining your process. This is a lot of work and a new habit to form but it is worth it to learning how to fuel your body properly to FINALLY feel in control of your body and its physical outcomes, and be more in tune with yourself and your needs. Time is going to go by anyways! Might as well work at it 🙂

An unexpected side effect came from this alien process of weighing my food. This process I felt was too strict and uptight. As you can see, I not only drank raw milk and eat full fat dairy on these days. I also INDULGED in frozen yogurt and some “unhealthy” processed snack foods. I wouldn’t have been caught DEAD eating these types of things previously. Once I knew I was eating in balance for my body, I didn’t feel so chained to eating EVERYTHING fermented, raw, and homemade. This allowed accommodations for eating at other peoples’ houses. It freed my conscious. And of course the scale kept moving down… about a half pound a week.
