Do you find yourself refusing foods, or even food groups because you fear they will cause you to gain weight?
Many of us can relate to these types of ideas of health and things we “do” and “don’t” eat because we are concerned about gaining weight. Surprisingly, there isn’t much bearing on scientific evidence to confirm many of these ideas, and many of them have been fabricated in our minds as a result of the accumulation of many different sources of dietary advice, opinions, and personal experiences. Until you finally unweave this tangled mess of information, you have no idea the amount of misinformation you have embraced in regards to your health. how are we sucked into whole foods obsession?
1. We desire structure and simplicity.
Isn’t it just easier to think you can cut out certain foods or certain food groups than more complex ways of trying to lose weight? We desire the simplicity and like the idea of a simple fix to our weight woes.
2. We are meeting our need for community and belonging
It brings a sense of community to (sometimes literally, sometimes figuratively) join a group of people who enjoy eating in a certain way. Think vegetarian, vegan, keto, carnivore.
3. We are afraid
We fear dyer consequences of eating our personal “forbidden” foods. Non organic, red meat, not grass fed, not pasture raised foods.

How can these conflicting ideas possibly all equate to health?
We live by our fabricated personal definition of health and judge ourselves based on this standard. Since we are judging ourselves, it’s important that we have a truthful definition of what is healthy. The World Health Organization defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. “.
How can truly have health if we fail to have mental well-being because we are believing misinformation in regards to what is healthy or not?
How can we have mental well-being if we fear eating certain foods?
We can’t.
So how can we determine truth in this area? How can we reconcile our personal ideas and mindset of health with truth?

Shockingly, your personal nutritional needs is information that is widely available to us but is commonly disregarded. When we compare the “nuts and bolts” science to more exciting, simple, fun ideas we just gloss over them. When we are quite literally controlled by the fear of what we do or don’t eat, we aren’t open to this information.

Instructions
- Find out your custom macros. There are a few online sources for this, I used this one which is associated with this group which will give you some personalized guidance. Alternatively you could use this book for men or this one for women - I was able to request from my library. The numbers may differ slightly depending on the calculator but it will give you a general idea and starting point.
- Measure to hold yourself fully accountable with what you are eating. To be accurate, you must measure your food and drink on a food scale.
- Calculate nutrition facts. These are readily available online. USDA has a database for food data and another great one is Nutritionx which I usually look up most things.
- Track to see how what you are eating compares to what you should be consuming in a day. Using an app like this ($3 one-time fee), a journal like this or even a regular notebook.
- Keep on going and refining your process. This is a lot of work and a new habit to form but it is worth it to learning how to fuel your body properly to FINALLY feel in control of your body and its physical outcomes, and to be more in tune with yourself and your needs. Time is going to go by anyways! Might as well work at something that will create positive change in your life 🙂

It’s not to say you can’t have personal preferences or foods you enjoy more than others. It’s not to say you can’t continue to limit foods in a certain food group, or avoid certain foods altogether. But when you embrace scientific evidence for what your body nutritionally needs it will change your perspective. The former thoughts you clung to so desperately will fade away when compared to truth and consistent evidence. No more fads that go and in and out with the times and capture us with their excitement for something new. No more lies keeping us captive with false ideas and keeping us from our personal goals.
Don’t allow yourself to stay deceived or to live in fear anymore! Embark on a learning adventure and embrace difficulty with courage. It is far better than the alternative.
