What if your goal isn’t to lose weight but to FEEL better? As a mom, so many demands are on our bodies especially in the seasons of pregnancy, the newborn stage, and breastfeeding. Nevermind things don’t slow down and then there is sports, kids activities, homeschooling, school events, you name it.
There are some basic principles of macro counting that – without tracking – can REVOLUTIONIZE your health and energy level.
We tend to go for gimmicks when we are in need of a quick fix for energy. Late night scrolling equals spending money on special vitamins or supplements. Energy drinks or specialty coffees give us the kick we need to get to the next thing. Chocolates or sweet treats, chips or crunchy snacks, give us something quick and grab-and-go when we are completely taxed by the demands surrounding us.
But do these things actually help us feel better long term? What if I told you some simple tricks that wouldn’t cost you any more WASTED MONEY, WASTED TIME, OR any WASTED ENERGY and that would ACTUALLY BOOST your energy LONG TERM?

Macro counting is commonly associated with weight loss but in fact it has many purposes not just for weight loss but also for weight gain and maintenance. It provides us with helpful guidelines that help us understand what our bodies truly need.
So if you are feeling deficient physically and like things are not firing on all 8 cylinders, let’s take a look at what you should be eating in terms of your macros. This is concrete information to show you if you are eating a balanced diet of what your body actually needs. This should be a FIRST STEP BEFORE you go the route of researching energy boosting supplements to your diet or all the rabbit holes associated with our health.
Feel Better Macros for Moms is applying these macro based eating concepts WITHOUT getting deeper into trying to modify our weight at a time when that isn’t our priority.
how to determine my mom macros?
First, use a calculator to determine your macro numbers. You will want to select “Maintenance” as your goal. We are going to focus on one of these categories first, which makes ALL the difference in how YOU FEEL and YOUR ENERGY level.
The numbers you will be given on the left side of the page are “Your Daily Calories” and “Your Macro Results” with “Protein” right at the top.
The protein number is what we are going to focus on for our Mom Macros.
protein is the key
Our protein number is what our body nutritionally needs for protein EVERY DAY. Lets take our protein number and divide it by 3. The answer for me is just over 40. So if I plan on eating only 3 meals a day I need to ensure I am getting over 40 grams of protein per meal. I try to plan for 30 at breakfast and more at lunch and dinner to meet my total for the day. But this can be different for you if you prefer to eat snacks or have 5 meals a day. Whatever you want to do is fine as long as you can hit that number.
For many of us, this is a COMPLETELY different way to eat than how we have been eating. It was a huge shock to me and felt darn near impossible! But this really SHOWS that my body was SORELY DEPRIVED from some very important building blocks it needed. Particularly at a time when my body was doing a lot of rebuilding and expending a lot of energy. And it SHOWED with my poor energy and mood swings. Working towards meeting my protein goal for the day resulted in me feeling so much better. The impact it has on my overall health and energy is HUGE.
how to i follow my mom macros?
This part will be a process you will need to work though. Whether it’s grabbing easy proteins to hit your benchmark numbers through the day or weighing out home cooked meals and tracking it in an app, where there is a will there is a way. Whatever it takes for you to hit that protein number. Just start basic and easy and then you can build on more complex ways of meeting your macros numbers. Once you get some energy from boosting your protein in general and refueling your stores it will be easier to do this.

tips for meeting your mom macros
1. Isolate some macro friendly proteins you enjoy and STOCK UP!
I have a grocery list of staples that include some of my favorites. You may already have some favorites you can make a list of. Proteins consist mainly of dairy and meat. It’s easier than you think once you start considering that you should be eating more protein.
Get to the store, plan a grocery pickup, whatever you need to do, and get those foods that will help you meet your goals in the house and around you at ALL TIMES.
2. If you can, make a rough plan of how you will meet your protein number this week (and every week)
Check out my blog article about mix and match meal planning to simplify how you make this plan. This isn’t necessary to do if you have your kitchen stocked but it can help.
3. Plan for times you need a quick fix
Don’t overestimate your time and bandwidth to always be eating home cooked meals especially in harder seasons. Don’t set your sights on complex macro friendly meals and set yourself up with failure. One step at a time and keep it simple! Check out the grocery staples list for some of my favorites but plan on having jerky, protein bars, protein powder, frozen chicken tenders and other high protein convenience foods for when you need them.
4. Be comfortable with imperfection
Don’t expect to perfectly meet your protein goal right away. Don’t get discouraged when you don’t! This is a process and new habits are hard to develop. There are also a lot of foods you may try and not like, so trial and error is something to consider too.
If you are anything like me you will be getting in WAY more protein than you were before, so you will definitely be feeling positive effects REGARDLESS!
