Minimalist mom self care
Has self care become unattainable for you since becoming a mom? Read here for my Minimalist Mom Self Care tips.
trips to the spa… not right now
So many wonderful things we learn to associate with self care in our youth or singleness. So many of these things become unattainable for so many reasons once we become a mom. Maybe we are a stay at home parent whose spouse is working long hours and we quite literally get zero time without the kids in this season? What if we financially can’t afford many things. Maybe our “free time” out of the house is spent working and rushing around to get our errands done. What are some options for us? How can we pursue self care when there is quite literally no time or no options? MINIMALIST mom self care is the key to solving this problem!
reframe your mindset
When you think of self care, where does your mind go? If you think self care HAS to involve being without the kids or your family, or HAS to cost money let’s unpack this a bit.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with having time without the kids, or spending money on a treat. But it may be unsustainable to do these things on a regular enough basis to maintain your emotional, spiritual, mental, and physical well being. In our busy lives we need to be more creative. We need to uncondition ourselves from believing our self care ALWAYS needs to involve money, products, or a getaway. Minimalist Mom Self care is realistic self care that will ACTUALLY happen. Helping you get the rest and rejuvenation you desperately need.
what ultimately feeds your souL?
This answer is Biblical. In our darkest moments, the Word of God can extinguish our fears and the presence of our Lord can bring us all comfort. The Psalms are a wonderful place to read and let wash over you. Ultimately, finding time to spend with the Lord our Rock is paramount and first in our ability to care for ourselves and then others.
Honestly, knowing how to study the Word as a wife and mother with so many competing demands can be difficult. Starting somewhere with something is the place to start. No matter how small. Hang a scripture on a sticky note somewhere and read it every morning. Don’t despise small beginnings and the Lord knows and sympathizes with women who have young children.
Don’t get discouraged or stagnant and keep moving in a positive direction. Although it can be difficult in a baby season of life, ultimately I have settled to have time with the Lord first thing in the morning to start my day off right. This has required setting an alarm to get up at 6am, which I was extremely resistant to for a long time. The fruit has been noticable and keeps me in that routine.
enjoying the small things
Life is quite literally what I make it, what we make it. To be honest, we have so much time we have the PRIVLAGE to manage. We may feel like it’s all sucked away by any little humans and all of life’s obligations. But you can start from the ground up building your life. Take a look at all the moving pieces and make it the way YOU want it. Pray for the things you want to see that you don’t see yet.
How to Identify your unique Minimalist Mom Self Care routine:
1. Keep it Simple.
Of course because of cost you may need to keep it simple. Naturally, busy mom life demands that if it’s not simple, it may never happen. For example, you can enjoy a 15 minute tea or coffee in the morning before everyone gets up. A longer hot shower with a shower steamer or some essential oils after the kids go to bed. Taking a short walk while your husband is working from home and your kids are occupied or resting, or with the kids or baby. Check out my list below if you need some suggestions. We don’t need to overthink or over complicate this.
2. Make it Reoccurring.
You have the ability to make self care a reoccurring event in your life. Whatever it is that feeds you or helps you feel good and gives you a little pick me up… DO THOSE THINGS. Do one a day or aim for one a few times a week. Try and try again and find what works for both you AND your family.
3. Assess what is working and not working.
Of course we have non-negotables and sacrifices we make but is there anything that you are doing that you don’t like or that causes stress and are continuing to do it because you feel you have to? Pray about it and be open to alternatives. Is dinner a complex issue every night with tons of clean up? I had tried switching to one pot or one pan meals and a lot of them were still dragging down my evening. Throwing together a macro friendly meal plan has been way simpler and can easily be dressed up if I have more time.
4. Keep digging and improving.
What matters most to you – what are your priorities? Is there not enough time in your day to fit everything in that you need or you feel your family needs? Most importantly, it’s time to reassess and identify a few priorities and cut away everything else. It’s your life and you can adjust it, or take things back accordingly. You’ll never know if you don’t try. Personally, I think you’ll realize is that so many people are doing WAY too much and you may need to dial back even further than you originally thought..
